As someone who is contributing to lowering of standards of the novice/sportsman class, I was delighted to see an Enduro school on the calendar.
I did not have any ideas what to expect on the day but did not have high expectations in regard of what I would take from it. I believed that with a large group of riders, coaching would be vague and would be no more than a mini Enduro and a fun day out which would be over by dinnertime. I was greatly mistaken.
The day started off with a rider briefing where we were introduced to the instructors and our day ahead was laid out. After a quick talk on fitness, nutrition, bike prep etc. we were brought to a short Enduro section up through a forest where the instructors assessed our ability. From this we were divided into groups based on our ability. This ensured that slower riders were not holding up the quicker riders.
Our group consisted of about 8 riders and 2 instructors. (Additional instructors joined in later in the day) During the course of the day we were brought on different Enduro short loops, each with different characteristics, rutted woodland sections, rocky climbs, fire roads, log jumps, assents, descents… The instructors were on hand at all times to first explain, then demonstrate, then offer advice as we completed the tasks.
The level of one to one tuition and the quality of the advice from the instructors was first rate. I learned more in an hour on the Enduro school than years of struggling around the mountains of Wicklow/Cork. I now believe an Enduro school should be mandatory for all novices for our own sake.
So in short, it was a great day out. It was very well organised and the instructors were of the highest calibre in regards of skill (worth the price alone just to see Chris/Mick in action) and quality of advice. At no point was I left unsure of what to do and the day was carried out with a sense of great fun.
From the great advice/instruction my riding improved throughout the day, (measured in how many times I had to pick up the bike) and with what I now know I can start practising the RIGHT way instead of listening to tips from people who don’t really know.
When you listen to the accomplishments of the instructors you quickly realise this is a serious effort, given by experts who have been there and brought home the silverware.
Knowing my lack of skills I had considered the BMW off-road skills course in Wales, but time wise this was out of the question. After attend this day out (A full 8 hour day) I could not recommend it higher. I look forward to the next one. It was a credit to all involved!!
